Teachers and students shun the newly renovated MEDCO building due to lack of air conditioners and other essential equipment
After two weeks of vacation, MEDCO Agalega students began the second school term yesterday at the Community Center Library. However, more than one in the archipelago expected that these young people would return to the college building, the renovation work being now completed - after more than a year waiting. The available information indicates that teachers and parents would not be satisfied with the quality of the classroom layout, and preferred to return to the library to continue this school year, even if this space does not fully meet the requirements of an adequate educational environment. The teaching staff and parents of students openly expressed during the school holidays their refusal to join the college premises at the start of this second term due, they explained, to certain shortcomings. In recent days, they have submitted a list of demands to the authorities in Mauritius, in particular to the Outer Islands Development Corporation (OIDC). Among their demands are the installation of air conditioners and fans, the installation of new curtains, the establishment of a canteen, and the redesign of the school playground. The protesters are also demanding the construction of a brand new and modern building for MEDCO Agalega.
The management of the OIDC confirmed to Le-Mauricien the refusal to enter the renovated building and indicated that it had received a list of grievances. “The building renovation work was the responsibility of the OIDC and we did what was necessary in this regard. However, the arrangement of classrooms and the installation of teaching equipment and everything relating to the smooth running of teaching falls under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education and MEDCO. We have transmitted the grievances to the authorities concerned,” declared last night the director of the OIDC. The MEDCO Agalega college building had been seriously damaged by the violent cyclone Chido which had struck the island in December 2024. And since that date it has remained out of service.
