The work of the judicial inquest established to shed light on the death of John Mick Martingale continued at Rose Hill Court on Thursday. Questioned by Me Ricky Bhookun, Senior State Counsel, Prison Officer Kritish Ghoorah recounted the events that occurred on the night of September 7, 2024.
During his patrol around 8:30 p.m., he surprised the inmate with a cell phone.
A search subsequently took place in John Mick Martingale's cell where officers from Beau-Bassin prison seized the device. According to Kristish Ghoorah, the inmate made no resistance and handed over the phone to them. He maintained that John Mick Martingale showed no trace of physical or psychological violence.
Furthermore, the Prison Officer mentioned that the deceased had already told him that he wanted to commit suicide so as not to be detained in the "punishment ward". This, after cigarettes were discovered in his possession. The judicial inquiry will continue on February 19, 2026.
As a reminder, John Mick Martingale was arrested on October 29, 2022 at the airport after a trip with Ukrainian Mariia Perosolkina.
