Former weather station director Subiraj Sok Appadu dies

The former director of the Vacoas meteorological station, Subiraj Sok Appadu Soobaraj Nayroo, is no more. He died after a long illness, at the age of 79, announced his son, Dr Sok Appadu Soobaraj Nayroo, on his Facebook page this Wednesday morning.

Former resident of the Royal College of Curepipe, originally from a family of notables from Chemin-Grenier and eldest of nine children, Subiraj Sok Appadu Soobaraj Nayroo held a degree in physics from the University of Andhra Pradesh. He then trained in meteorology in Nairobi, before obtaining a postgraduate diploma at the École Polytechnique de Lausanne.

Joining the Vacoas meteorological station in 1970, he rose through the ranks until becoming its director in 2001. During his career, he notably experienced the passage of Cyclone Gervaise in 1975, which he described as the most violent meteorological phenomenon after Carol. “It was in 1975 and we had recorded a peak of 260 km/h at Mon Desert Alma,” he said.

“With infinite sadness and a heart heavy with grief, I announce the death of my beloved father, Mr. Sok Appadu Soobaraj Nayroo, former Director of our Meteorological Service. He left us after a long and courageous battle with illness – a battle he fought with a strength that inspired us all and a dignity that reflected the greatness of his soul,” wrote Dr Sok Appadu Soobaraj Nayroo.

He paid tribute to his father in these words: “My father was not only a man of science and wisdom; he was the gentle anchor of our lives, the silent beacon that lit our days. His laughter warmed our hearts, his gaze was full of kindness, and his hands built for us a world of security and affection. The values ​​he passed on to us – compassion, resilience, integrity – are not mere lessons; they are the living echo of his soul, which we will carry within us forever. In the immensity of this unspeakable loss, we find fragile comfort in the precious tapestry of memories that he woven for us, in each shared moment, each whispered word, each embrace that still remains engraved in our flesh and our heart. »

The funeral of Subiraj Sok Appadu Soobaraj Nayroo is scheduled for this afternoon. The funeral procession will leave the residence of his son, Dr Sok Appadu Soobaraj Nayroo, located at Dr Joseph Rivière Street, Les Casernes, Curepipe, at 3 p.m., to go to the Camp Gopal crematorium, in Chemin-Grenier.
