The German Federation announced this Friday the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as coach until 2030, a contract which runs until the end of the World Cup. The former Liverpool coach succeeds Julian Nagelsmann, carried away by the elimination of the Nationalmannschaft in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup against Paraguay (1-1, 3-4 on the tabs).
Following his departure from Anfield in 2024, Klopp served as Red Bull's director of global football. At 59, he will discover for the first time in his career the daily life of a coach, with the heavy responsibility of restoring momentum to a quadruple world champion selection lacking results. His deputies will be Pep Lijnders, his historic pair at Liverpool who accompanied Pep Guardiola at City last season, Peter Krawietz, who was also with him at the Reds, and Sven Bender, a former international midfielder who notably played for Dortmund.
The construction site seems immense. Crowned in Brazil in 2014, Germany has not reached the round of 16 of a World Cup since this title. On the European scene, the situation is just as severe. During the last two editions of the Euro, the Mannschaft did not go beyond the quarter-finals, including a failure at home in 2024. Klopp will launch his mandate with a first major test in the Netherlands, in the Nations League.
