The May 1st Collective is meeting the public on May 1st at the Plaza, in Rose-Hill, for a gathering under the sign of social mobilization, in an economic context considered worrying.
In front of the press yesterday, Enrico Permal, one of the spokespersons for the movement, made a blunt observation: the population is already suffering the effects of an austerity policy initiated since 2025.
Pension reform, increase in the age of eligibility for the Basic Retirement Pension, gradual abolition of social benefits, increase in the prices of bread, petroleum products and basic foodstuffs... all measures which, according to him, further weaken purchasing power, in particularly that of employees and the most vulnerable. Added to this is inflation which reached 4.2%.
The spokesperson also pointed to an unstable international environment. The crisis in the Middle East, in particular the tensions involving Iran, represents, according to him, a geopolitical risk for the Indian Ocean and the countries of the region, in particular with the presence of the Diego-Garcia military base in the Chagos archipelago.
Faced with this “alarming picture”, the Collective believes that the celebration of Labor Day cannot be purely symbolic. “The lean years risk making a comeback,” warns Enrico Permal, citing worrying prospects for the country.
The gathering will begin at 10 a.m. at the Plaza and will bring together delegates, members and partner organizations. The Collective is launching an appeal to the general public to join the movement, with a clear objective: to understand the mechanisms of current crises, to identify those who suffer the consequences and those who benefit from them.
