The Medical Council on Friday removed the suspension of Dr Nishan Moheeputh. This after this body received the report from the Medical Disciplinary Tribunal - which was tasked with launching an investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of magistrate Varsha Biefun-Doorga in 2024. The Medical Council had provisionally suspended Dr Moheeputh on the 13th February 2025, in the wake of the death of this magistrate. The practitioner was then referred to a Medical Disciplinary Tribunal, as provided for by the Medical Council Act of 1999. This Tribunal began its investigation in March 2025. It was chaired by a judge of the Supreme Court, Gaitree Jugessur-Manna. This was assisted by two assessors, notably two doctors with at least 10 years of experience and who are not members of the Medical Council. Dr Moheeputh was for his part represented by Me áµAssad Peeroo. Dr Moheeputh was notified of this decision by the Medical Council this Friday April 3. This organization immediately issued an Annual Practicing Certificate, certifying that the doctor can freely practice as a specialist in plastic surgery and reconstructive microsurgery, in accordance with the provisions of the Medical Council Act of 1999. Dr Moheeputh confides to us his relief that "the truth has finally triumph.” He explains to us that he suffered considerable harm as a result of his suspension. He particularly thanked his lawyer, Mr Peeroo, and expressed his gratitude to the Medical Council and the disciplinary tribunal for their sense of fairness. These disciplinary proceedings against Dr Moheeputh follow the death of magistrate Varsha Biefun-Doorga, aged 43 years old, death on July 23, 2024. She had her intestine perforated, leading to fatal septicemia, during liposuction carried out by Dr. Moheeputh on July 19, 2024 in a private clinic in Grand-Baie. It was the mother of the deceased who lodged a complaint with the Medical Council. This body launched an investigation against the doctor, before temporarily suspending him and referring him to the Medical Disciplinary Tribunal.
