Muzzafar Ally Pacquet, aged 27, was on his way to work on the morning of Saturday, April 18, when a tragedy occurred. This resident of Terre-Rouge was at the Solitude traffic lights when a van driven by jockey Rye Joorawon hit him after running a red light. According to the first elements of the investigation, the driver did not respect the signs and was not able to avoid the victim.

Seriously injured following this violent impact, the young man died on Wednesday evening (April 22) in the intensive care unit of the SSR hospital in Pamplemousses. The autopsy concluded that he died from his injuries. The jockey is expected in Pamplemousses court this Friday for a new provisional charge, after the death of the victim.

Muntasir is devastated. “Finn ariv enn maler, mo frer inn desede, pann kapav fer nanie,” he blurted, trying to hold back his tears. But the elder of the two brothers is also driven by a deep feeling of indignation. “Mo dimann lazistis pou mo frer, li bizin gagn lazistis,” he adds firmly.

The pain is unbearable. “We can suffer well, my mama can suffer,” he said, adding that he was preparing to collect his brother’s remains Thursday morning at the morgue of the Dr. A. G. Jeetoo hospital. April 18 will remain a date marked with a black stone for the family.

“Li ti pe al travay sa zour-la. I don't want to open the port, but. We didn’t wait to get there,” continues Muntasir. On the road to Solitude, the tragedy occurred when the vehicle of jockey Rye Joorawon, coming from Morcellement Saint-André towards Balaclava, crossed the junction despite a red light, according to the first conclusions of the police investigation.

The impact could not be avoided. The motorcyclist collapsed on the asphalt, seriously injured. Arrested after the accident, the jockey was taken to the Triolet police station. He told investigators that the motorcyclist was heading towards Triolet and that the lights were green for his passage. He claims to have tried to avoid the collision by turning to his right, but it was already too late: the motorcycle hit his door.

“Monn won enn call dir mwa mo frer inn fer enn aksidan bien grave,” says Muntasir. With his mother, he immediately went to the hospital. Muzzafar Ally Pacquet never regained consciousness. “Going to the hospital for a week and seeing him in this state was torture for our family. Nou pa ti kapav get li soufer,” confides the brother.

Jockey Rye Joorawon, after the accident, was interviewed on Saturday morning before being allowed to leave. He appeared in Pamplemousses court on Tuesday, accompanied by his lawyer Yash Bhadain, and escorted by the Triolet police, for a provisional charge of reckless assault and battery. However, after the death of the motorcyclist, he will have to appear again this Friday to answer to a provisional charge of homicide
