It would be a historic moment for the country if, for the first time, a woman becomes Deputy Prime Minister. This is the reaction of Reza Uteem, Minister of Labor, after the announcement of the imminent appointment of Arianne Navarre-Marie as number two in the government.

While recalling that the final decision rests with the Prime Minister, Reza Uteem believes that Arianne Navarre-Marie represents “quite a symbol”, particularly through her Chagossian origins and her political career.

According to him, his appointment would also be an honor for the activist family.

The minister was speaking this morning as part of Labor Day, after a wreath-laying ceremony at the Anjalay Coopen monument at the Children's Court.
