On the occasion of Labor Day, Steven Obeegadoo, of the Militant Platform, and Alan Ganoo, leader of the Muvman Patriot Morisien (MPM), emphasized the unity of activists and the need to preserve the heritage of social struggles in Mauritius. They paid homage to the tribunes at Caudan this Friday.

“We must draw inspiration from the struggles of the past,” said Steven Obeegadoo. He recalled that the former regime of Pravind Jugnauth worked for the working class, particularly with the introduction of the minimum wage. For comparison, the former Deputy Prime Minister also mentioned the current high cost of living.

Steven Obeegadoo highlighted the importance of historical figures like Dr. Maurice Curé, Emmanuel Anquetil and Pandit Sahadeo, who helped bring workers together across community divisions to defend social justice.

He also insisted on the historical significance of May 1, which he describes as a “day of memory, struggle and demands”, recalling that several social achievements – including the universal pension and the minimum wage – are the result of union struggles. Faced with the current economic context, he called for continued mobilization in order to protect these gains and support the most vulnerable.

For his part, Alan Ganoo spoke of a day of contemplation and recognition towards the great figures of the labor movement, while avoiding any political controversy. He highlighted unity between generations and movements, paying particular tribute to the memory of Azor Adélaïde, before laying wreaths in her honor.

The two speakers thus called for inspiration from past struggles to continue the fight for a fairer society.
