The former Speaker of the National Assembly, Adrien Duval, believes that the Budget lacks boldness and does not respond to the main challenges facing Mauritius. According to him, the government's numerous announcements risk remaining without effect, due to lack of sufficient execution capacity.
“This budget will change no one’s life,” he said. He believes that the measures announced will not bring tangible improvement to the daily lives of Mauritians. He criticizes the government in particular for multiplying announcements without having fully implemented those of the previous budgetary year. “This is proof that there is no implementation,” he said, adding that the Budget lacks continuity and long-term vision.
According to him, the executive is not sufficiently tackling waste in public administration. For him, reducing the state's lifestyle and better management of public resources should have been among the priorities of the Budget. He discusses expenses linked to official missions, state structures and inefficiencies regularly noted in the audit director's reports.
Adrien Duval was also skeptical of announcements concerning artificial intelligence. “We should have started talking about digitalization first and foremost. » He believes that several tools and infrastructures already exist, but remain underused. He believes that the country's priorities should focus more on immediate issues such as crime, public safety and improving state services.
On the economic level, he considers that the austerity policy initiated by the government has not produced the expected results. It highlights that the Budget remains “disconnected from the major and pressing problems of Mauritians” and risks prolonging the difficulties linked to the cost of living and the economic slowdown.
