“Mo pou gete sipa mo pou demisyone dime mem antan ki VPM (deputy Prime Minister”): this is what the leader of the MMM declared at the end of the Political Bureau of the Mauves, late in the afternoon this Monday.
“My decision is made, but when I implement it, and if there is execution, I will communicate the details,” he added.
Paul Bérenger announced that he will not be present at the National Assembly this Tuesday, when parliamentary work resumes. However, he clarified that MMM deputies who wish to be present in the hemicycle will be able to do so. “Everyone will have to assume their responsibilities,” he nevertheless stressed.
Why is he considering leaving the government?
According to Paul Bérenger, he does not agree with what has been happening within the government since November. He claims to have mentioned it during his meeting with the Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, this Monday.
In view of the “worsening” economic situation and international tensions, particularly with the war in the Middle East, “this is not the time for the country not to have a full-time Minister of Finance,” declared Paul Bérenger.
And added: “If I have to choose between my position as VPM and the country, I will choose the country. If I have to choose between my country and my party, I will choose my country.”
Paul Bérenger also indicated that the Central Committee of the MMM will meet this Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Hennessy Park, Ébène. If necessary, the MMM will then convene its Assembly of Delegates.
