The government has decided to raise the eligibility threshold for the Social Register of Mauritius (SRM) in order to better take into account the impact of the increase in the cost of living on the most vulnerable households.
This measure was announced by the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Navin Ramgoolam, during the presentation of the 2026-2027 Budget to Parliament this Friday.
Thus, the income threshold giving access to the SRM will increase from Rs 14,000 to Rs 16,400 from July 1, 2026. A further increase is also planned a year later, the threshold to be increased to Rs 17,500 from July 1, 2027.
According to the head of government, this revision aims to strengthen the effectiveness of social policies intended for the most vulnerable people and to better reflect price developments.
The Social Register of Mauritius constitutes the national database used to identify low-income households eligible to benefit from various social assistance programs implemented by the State.
