“Positive… but cautious”: these are the words of Paul Bérenger following the latest developments in the Chagos issue. Reached by telephone by RadioPlus, the Deputy Prime Minister said he was showing reserve. According to him, the issue will be discussed this Friday in the Council of Ministers.
Also questioned about the legislative process surrounding the validation of the Chagos deal by the British Parliament, Paul Bérenger says he is waiting for the situation to evolve.
Note that Donald Trump indicated on Thursday, following an exchange with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, that he accepted the return of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius by the United Kingdom, while specifying that he would ensure the maintenance of the American military presence in this archipelago in the Indian Ocean.
