Dr. Nishan Moheeputh, plastic surgeon, was “found guilty of gross medical negligence,” according to a press release issued by the Medical Council this Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

Indeed, he had performed liposuction on magistrate Varsha Devi Biefun-Doorga on July 19, 2023 in a private clinic in Grand-Baie. Four days later, she died. She was only 43 years old. The autopsy attributed the cause of death to a perforation of the intestine which caused fatal septicemia.

The Council of the Order of Physicians, seized of this matter by the relatives of the deceased, opened an investigation against the doctor. He was provisionally suspended on February 13, 2025 pending the conclusions of a Medical Disciplinary Tribunal which had been set up, under the chairmanship of a judge of the Supreme Court, Gaitree Jugessur-Manna.

This Medical Disciplinary Tribunal, after having heard several witnesses, and whose work was spread over several months, thus considered that some of the accusations brought against Dr. Moheeputh had been proven, and held that there had been “gross medical negligence” on his part.

Following the findings of this Tribunal, the Medical Council met on April 1, 2026, and decided to issue a “severe reprimand” against the doctor under section 17 of the Medical Council Act 1999.

However, his suspension was lifted on April 1, 2026, the Medical Council considering that “further suspension was not warranted in view of all the facts and circumstances of this case”. He was also allowed to practice again.
