A former footballer now converted to maritime activities, Steeve Curpanen, 53, presented himself on his own Tuesday evening at the office of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) in Grand-Baie. He was immediately placed in custody as part of an investigation into drug trafficking. The fifty-year-old had been actively sought after an operation carried out a few days earlier, on April 1, in Grand-Gaube. During this intervention, the officers got their hands on a bag containing several cylindrical containers. These contained a large number of cellophane bags filled with a plant substance suspected of being cannabis, divided into two separate batches. The police also seized various elements considered incriminating, in particular cannabis resin, two containers of liquid suspected of being oil derived from this drug, as well as a syringe containing a similar substance. Added to this is an electronic pocket scale bearing suspicious traces, suggesting a packaging activity with a view to resale. The market value of all the substances seized is estimated at around Rs 142,000. According to the first indications of According to the investigation, these products could come from Reunion Island and be intended for the local market. At the time of the police intervention, the suspect allegedly put up some resistance before managing to flee, triggering a vast search operation in several regions of the north, particularly in coastal areas where he frequented regularly.Now under arrest, Steeve Curpanen faces a provisional charge of “drug dealing”, more precisely of possession of cannabis with a view to its distribution. The investigation is continuing to determine the extent of his activities and to identify possible accomplices. It should be noted that this is not his first run-in with the law. In 2025, he had already been arrested for the alleged offense of conspiracy in a case of importing drugs by sea.
