Muslims today celebrate the most important festival in the Islamic calendar: Eid-el-Adha, also called “the festival of sacrifice”. It commemorates the act of submission of the prophet Abraham towards God.

This event is marked by the ritual sacrifice of an animal. The faithful, dressed in their best clothes, gather early in the morning in the places of prayer. LâAïd-el-Adha, also called Aïd-el-Kébir, celebrates the submission of Ibrahim (Abraham) to Allah, who, according to the Koran, ordered him to sacrifice his son Ishmaël. In memory of this ordeal, the faithful sacrifice an animal, most often an ox.

As tradition dictates, the festival is also marked by the free distribution of food to passers-by and families in need. A concrete way of perpetuating the values of mutual aid, humility and compassion which are at the heart of this celebration.
