Faced with the controversy aroused by the holding of university exams on the day of Eid-ul-Adha, the Minister of Housing, Shakeel Mohamed, intervened with the University of Mauritius (UoM) in order to obtain a rearrangement of the exam calendar academics concerned. Several exams from the Faculty of Social Studies and Humanities were initially scheduled for this Thursday, a date coinciding with the celebration of Eid-ul-Adha. A situation which prevented many students from participating in exams under fair conditions due to the religious importance of this holiday for the Muslim community.

Seized of the question, Shakeel Mohamed contacted the vice-chancellor of the university, Dr Kavi Kumar Khedoo. At the end of the discussions, the university administration agreed to postpone the affected exams in order to allow affected students to take part without conflict with their religious obligations.

The Vice-Chancellor also gave assurance that in future, UoM will adopt a policy to avoid holding examinations during major religious celebrations. A decision hailed as progress towards greater inclusiveness and better respect for the cultural diversity of the country. In the process, Shakeel Mohamed launched an appeal to other educational institutions so that they draw inspiration from this approach and take more into consideration the religious realities of students in the development of their academic calendars.
