Teeruth Prasad Degnarain, an employee of the Ministry of Agro-Industry, has been suspended from his duties with immediate effect.
The announcement was made by Minister Arvin Boolell in response to a parliamentary question from MP Ravin Jugurnauth, this Tuesday, in the National Assembly.
Assigned to the State House as General Worker since 2018, Teeruth Prasad Degnarain is the subject of legal proceedings, in particular for criminal defamation.
His arrest followed a complaint filed by Bruneau Laurette at the Grand-Gaube police station, after the incidents that occurred Monday evening in front of the premises of the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC).
That evening, while former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and former Attorney General Maneesh Gobin were being questioned as part of the investigation into the oil contract awarded to Mercantile and Maritime Group, Teeruth Prasad Degnarain allegedly had heated exchanges with a journalist and uttered threats against him.
Later in the evening, he allegedly posted a video on Facebook in which he attacked several people, including other journalists.
Arrested then provisionally charged with criminal defamation, he was released on parole. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 8, 2027.
