Examinations scheduled for Thursday at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the University of Mauritius have been rescheduled. The date coincided with the celebration of Eid-Ul-Adha, preventing many Muslim students from attending.
It was Minister Shakeel Mohamed, number 3 in the government, who announced the news on Facebook, after questioning the vice-chancellor, Dr Kavi Kumar Khedo. The latter agreed to postpone the relevant tests and pledged that the university would no longer organize exams on religious holidays.
Shakeel Mohamed now invites other educational establishments in the country to adopt the same approach.
Below is Shakeel Mohamed's publication:
Eid-Ul-Adha & UOM ExamsSeveral exams for the Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities at the University of Mauritius were scheduled for Thursday, 28 May 2026 — coinciding with Eid-Ul-Adha, preventing many Muslim students from sitting them.I raised the matter with the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Kavi Kumar Khedo, who agreed to reschedule the affected papers. He further assured me that UOM will, going forward, adopt a policy of not holding examinations on days of religious observance. I invite all other educational institutions in Mauritius to follow this principle.
