Albanian police on Friday charged 27 additional protesters with public order offenses following a new demonstration in Tirana against a proposed luxury tourist resort linked to Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner.
Protesters were expected to gather again Friday evening, with demonstrators expressing their determination to continue demonstrations until their demands, including the cancellation of the project, are met.
Before the rally, police said 27 people had been accused of "directing" protesters off their planned routes during a march in the capital the previous night.
These people were accused of "acts undermining public order and security", according to the police press release.
Earlier this week, at least 35 demonstrators were charged for blocking the highway leading from Tirana to its airport on Sunday evening during a demonstration to protest the planned luxury hotel.
This wave of demonstrations was triggered by the appearance of fences and barbed wire, as well as bulldozers on the site, the beaches of a protected reserve on the coast of Zvernec, about a hundred kilometers southwest of Tirana.
Clashes between local demonstrators and members of a private security company at the site of the real estate project ignited the powder and incited thousands of demonstrators to participate in protest marches which continued for weeks.
Opposition to this project has also catalyzed the anger of part of the population against the situation in the country and what is perceived as corruption, with demonstrators now going so far as to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, in power for 13 years.
The luxury real estate project on the coast and on the island of Sazan, located opposite, occupies a site where many migratory birds nest, including hundreds of pink flamingos.
