Russia “has always supported Mauritius in its fight for Chagos” and will continue to do so. This was stated by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Mauritius, Irada Zeynalova, during an official reception organized on the occasion of the Russian National Day. The event was held in the presence of the Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, as well as several members of the Cabinet, at the Hennessy Park hotel, in Ébène, on Friday evening.

In her speech, the Russian diplomat affirmed that Moscow and Port-Louis have maintained close relations since the independence of Mauritius. “We have been together not only for the 58 years of Mauritius’ independence, but also historically,” she said.

Referring to the question of Chagos, Irada Zeynalova argued that “Mauritius is fighting again for the sovereignty of Chagos”. She added: “Russia has always supported Mauritius in this fight and will continue to do so. » According to her, “in the 21st century, there must no longer be colonies” and “people must be free and live in dignity”.

The ambassador also thanked Mauritius for “its position and neutrality” on international issues. She mentioned several areas of cooperation between the two countries, including student exchanges, energy projects, food security, the fight against drugs and climate change.

Upon leaving the event, the Prime Minister, questioned by the press about the budget, did not wish to make any comment.
