A 66-year-old resident of Triolet, hospitalized at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital (SSRN), in Pamplemousses, was arrested this Thursday afternoon, July 23, after police officers discovered on him a certain quantity of substance suspected of being cannabis.

Police officers assigned to the hospital police station responded to room 2-3, where the man had been hospitalized since the day before for a lung infection. The latter was also the subject of police surveillance.

During a body search carried out by law enforcement, a packet of Pall Mall brand cigarettes was found in the left front pocket of his shirt. Inside, police discovered nine homemade cigarettes containing a mixture of tobacco and leaves suspected of being cannabis, as well as nine small cellophane bags also containing plant material suspected of being cannabis.

After being medically discharged from the hospital in the afternoon, he was taken to the SSRN police station for investigation.

A search was then carried out at his home, located in Trio Road, Triolet, with his consent. However, no other illicit product was discovered there.

The seized substances were handed over to the ADSU in Grand-Baie, where they were weighed. The exhibits have been placed under seal and will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for analysis.

The suspect was detained pending his appearance in court and the investigation continues.
