A Trump project that is peeling: the blue paint just applied to the reflecting pool of the Lincoln Memorial is already peeling off, as the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States approach.
An AFP photographer was able to see workers removing pieces of paint from the pool on Friday which, very quickly colonized by algae, did not stay blue for long.
The problem seems to concern a large part of this 610 meter long mirror of water located in Washington, whose misfortunes are widely reported by the media and on social networks.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, President Donald Trump attributed this deterioration to “vandalism”.
"The algae is 75 percent gone, and the situation will be completely resolved soon, and the area that was vandalized, fortunately, is just a small damaged area, and it will be repaired next week," he said, adding that law enforcement "actively investigating".
In a place in the pool where the paint is damaged, the word "TRUMP" had been traced in the green mud deposited at the bottom.
The renovation of the reflecting pool - which cost $14 million according to the American media - is one of the projects dear to Donald Trump, who wishes to leave his mark on the American capital and its symbols. In particular, he has started to build a ballroom in the White House, and wants to build a triumphal arch over the Potomac River.
Concerning the emblematic basin of the Lincoln Memorial, in front of which Martin Luther King Jr. uttered his famous "I Have a Dream" in 1963, Donald Trump wanted it to be repainted blue "the color of the American flag".
The United States will celebrate 250 years of independence from the British Empire on July 4.
