A network of thieves operating in the north of the island has been put out of business by the Northern Division's Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit (DCIU).
The suspects mainly targeted houses under construction in the Trou-aux-Biches and Grand-Baie regions. The offenses were allegedly committed between March 12 and May 20. The loot is estimated at more than Rs 2 million.
According to the investigation, the criminals dismantled aluminum openings in order to enter houses. They then seized electrical cables, new air conditioners and other equipment installed on site.
So far, five suspects have been arrested, including a 45-year-old woman. The latter allegedly bought four stolen air conditioners for the sum of Rs 20,000.
Yesterday, two cousins living in Triolet were spotted riding a motorcycle in the targeted regions before being arrested by investigators. During their interrogation, they confessed to their involvement in several cases of theft.
They also declared having transported six stolen air conditioners aboard a vehicle belonging to a resident of the St-André subdivision, already under arrest in another theft case.
The suspects voluntarily led police to several locations where crimes were allegedly committed, including Arsenal, Triolet and Grand-Baie. However, no complaints had yet been registered regarding some of these sites.
According to police information, the suspects are also involved in similar cases in the east of the island.
Some of the stolen items were recovered and the investigation continues.
