Following the adoption, with amendments, of the Finance Bill and the Economic and Financial Measures (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill in the National Assembly, trade unionist Reaz Chuttoo affirmed that the mobilization will not stop.
He stressed that among all members of the government, only Minister Sydney Pierre voted against, while all the others voted in favor of the text.
According to him, “the struggle continues unabated”. He indicated that the Union Platform will meet to discuss the next modalities of action, while specifying that numerous initiatives are already organized outside the Platform around the same objective, which he describes as “dismantling of Providence”. He assured that the Platform will support all these actions.
Furthermore, Reaz Chuttoo believes that the union movement has just “written a new page in history”, emphasizing that it is rare, “every 20 to 25 years”, to see unions come together, without distinction, within the same platform and with a single voice.
Concerning the general strike voted on July 11, he recalled that it must be carried out by the workers and with respect for the democratic structures of the unions. However, he specified that before reaching this stage, “many other actions” will be organized.
