First local network of service stations: Engen gives way to a new identity

The countdown is on. After officially taking over Engen Petroleum (Mauritius) Limited in November 2025, Beta Oil Terminal Ltd, a subsidiary of the Bhunjun Group, is preparing to unveil the new identity which will definitively replace the Engen brand in Mauritius. The meeting is set for August 21, when the Bhunjun Group will lift the veil on this new name which will mark a turning point in the history of Mauritian oil distribution.

This rebranding constitutes the final stage of an acquisition which has reshuffled the cards in the sector. Since the approval of the Competition Commission, Beta Oil has become the first Mauritian company to own and operate a nationwide network of service stations in a sector dominated by multinationals such as Vivo Energy (Shell), TotalEnergies and Indian Oil Corporation. Beta Oil now controls 37 service stations as well as all distribution infrastructures previously operated under the Engen brand.

But beyond the commercial aspect, this exercise carries a strong symbolic dimension for the Bhunjun Group: it is about opening “a new chapter” celebrating “Mauritian entrepreneurship and economic sovereignty”.

May 2024

Following the acquisition of Engen Limited by Vivo Energy in May 2024, the Competition Commission of Mauritius requires the sale of Engen Mauritius' activities in order to preserve balanced competition in the fuel market. A selection process is then launched to find a buyer.

April 2025

The Bhunjun Group announces that it has entered into an agreement with Vivo Energy for the purchase of the activities of Engen Mauritius. The operation provides for the takeover of the network's 37 service stations as well as all of the company's commercial activities.

November 2025

Following approval from the Competition Commission, Beta Oil Terminal Ltd, a subsidiary of the Bhunjun Group, completes the acquisition of Engen Petroleum (Mauritius) Limited. An operation which makes Beta Oil the first Mauritian operator to operate a national network of service stations.

Founded in the 1960s, the Bhunjun Group is active in construction (Bhunjun & Sons Ltd), concrete production (Betonix Ltd), real estate (Bhunjun Properties Ltd) and hospitality (Fine Holidays Ltd). He is at the origin of several emblematic projects in Mauritius, including the Voile d'Or Hotel in Bel-Ombre, the Sofitel Mauritius Imperial in Flic-en-Flac and the University of Mauritius.
