Grand-Baie: armed with two forks and a knife, he causes panic in front of a hotel before biting a police officer

A turbulent police intervention took place on the evening of Thursday July 23 in front of a hotel in Grand-Baie. A 25-year-old man was arrested after causing panic by brandishing two forks and a kitchen knife while making threats.

He is also accused of biting a police officer during his arrest.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the police were dispatched to the scene around 11:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found an individual in front of the main entrance of the establishment, holding two forks and a kitchen knife in his right hand.

The man, identified as Daren, an entrepreneur living in Pointe-aux-Sables, allegedly adopted particularly aggressive behavior. In the presence of several hotel employees, he allegedly uttered insults and threats against the police, while refusing to comply with their orders.

According to the police, he also tried to attack the hotel staff. The police finally managed to control him after a difficult intervention. When he was arrested, he had an injury to his left knee.

Once taken to the Grand-Baie police station, the situation escalated again. While in the investigation room, the suspect allegedly attempted to escape using the corridor leading to the toilets.

Intercepted by a police officer, he fell to the ground, injuring his nose and mouth. He then continued to put up strong resistance before biting a police officer on the middle finger of his right hand, inflicting an injury.

The injured officer was taken to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital (SSRNH), where he received treatment before returning to duty.

The suspect was also taken to SSRN Hospital to receive treatment, before being admitted for observation under double police surveillance.

An investigation is underway. The young man will notably have to answer to the accusations of “Rogue and Vagabond” and of assault on a police officer.
