Driven by a surge of solidarity born on social networks, a citizen initiative continues this Saturday morning in Curepipe. A second day of collection and donations is organized in front of the Galaxy car park, as temperatures continue to drop and the situation of homeless people remains worrying.
Touched by the situation of the homeless, Emanuel Cateaux, resident of Curepipe, explains that he took the initiative to personally engage with several people living on the street, notably Raj, Ignace and Babilone, 46 years old, all facing particularly difficult living conditions in the streets of Curepipe.
“Some live in corners, in full view of everyone, in total indifference even though they are probably in danger, especially with this hellish winter that we are going to go through here, in the heights of Curepipe, where the cold penetrates despite our clothes,” he adds.
In this context, the first mobilization launched online quickly found a response among the public. Many residents responded with donations of warm clothes, blankets and food.
“We try to offer them hot meals and something to cover themselves for the winter,” explains Emanuel Cateaux. From this dynamic was born an informal collective initiative, carried solely by committed residents.
Building on this momentum of solidarity, the collective is now meeting the public this Saturday morning for a second day of collection and distribution, opposite the Galaxy car park in Curepipe. The objective: to continue the effort and provide concrete support to people in very precarious situations.
