Idris Lallmahomed: the master of Qawwali has bowed out

Idris Lallmahomed, emblematic figure of Qawwali in Mauritius, died on the evening of Saturday July 18, at the age of 80. He dedicated his life to Qawwali and Ghazal.

Last May, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award 2025 from the Ministry of Arts and Culture.

The artist, who had a 63-year career, was very happy with this recognition. “It is truly a great honor for me to receive such a distinction. I am passionate about Qawwali and Ghazal, and I have been singing all my life,” he told us.

His nephew, Bilal Lallmahomed, also a Qawwali singer, describes him as the one who knew how to keep this art alive:

“He was a very big fan of Qawwali and Ghazal. With his brothers, they founded the group Lallmahomed Brothers, which still exists. He was the leader. He knew how to preserve this culture and the tradition of Qawwali in Mauritius,” confides Bilal Lallmahomed.

A trained jeweler, Idris Lallmahomed was also the owner of the Shamiana restaurant in Rose-Hill.

The Namaz Janazah will take place today at 1:30 p.m. at Jinnah Street, Stanley, Rose-Hill. The funeral will follow at the St-Martin cemetery.
