India has approved the secondment of a senior official from its tax administration to take up a key position within the Mauritius customs administration. According to a decision validated by the Indian Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), Gurkaran Singh Bains, officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), Customs & Indirect Taxes executive, will soon be assigned to the customs department within the Mauritius Revenue Authority.

This appointment comes within the framework of an administrative cooperation agreement between India and Mauritius, relating in particular to the strengthening of institutional capacities, the modernization of customs control systems and the improvement of trade facilitation.

Gurkaran Singh Bains will be seconded on a three-year fixed-term contract. His mandate will begin upon his official assumption of office, the date of which has not yet been specified.

He will hold the position of Director of Customs within the Mauritius Revenue Authority in Port-Louis. His responsibilities will include overseeing customs operations, strengthening control and compliance mechanisms, as well as supporting administrative modernization programs.

Gurkaran Singh Bains is an experienced officer of the Indian Revenue Service, belonging to the batch of 2006. He has served in several capacities in the Indian Revenue Service, including positions related to anti-tax evasion, Goods and Services Tax (GST) management and Customs Intelligence. He most recently served as Commissioner at the Directorate General of GST Intelligence in Gurugram.

This assignment is a continuation of the regular exchanges of executives between India and Mauritius in strategic sectors. New Delhi and Port Louis maintain close cooperation in the field of economic security, fiscal governance and institutional strengthening, with the Indian Ocean constituting a priority area of ​​partnership between the two countries.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) is the highest-level decision-making body of the Government of India regarding appointments to senior administrative posts. Chaired by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, it is small in composition, usually including the Interior Minister, Amit Shah, as the only other member.
