The movements of military ships “remain prohibited,” said a senior Iranian military official, quoted by state television Irib. "Only civilian vessels can cross it through designated passages and with the permission of the Revolutionary Guard Navy", the ideological army of the Islamic Republic.

The truce between the Israeli army and the pro-Iranian Hezbollah movement, which came into force on Thursday at 9:00 p.m. GMT for ten days, was one of the conditions set by Iran for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Irib recalled.

The head of Iranian diplomacy did not specify whether the strait would remain open until the end of the ceasefire in Lebanon or that in force between the United States and Iran which theoretically ends on April 22 but could be extended.

Donald Trump welcomed this announcement from Tehran, while warning that the American blockade on Iranian ports would remain in force until an agreement was reached.

“Iran has just announced that the Strait of Iran (sic) is fully open (…). Thank you!”, wrote the American president on his Truth Social platform, in a message written entirely in capital letters.

He then said that Iran was removing all its sea mines from the strait with the support of the United States and would “never close it again”, without providing details.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz must be "sustainable" and "without toll", said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, like French President Emmanuel Macron, following a multinational meeting in Paris on securing this strategic sea route.

The strait, through which a fifth of the oil and gas consumed in the world usually passes, had been blocked by Iran since the start of the conflict, which established de facto rights of passage there.

After the shocks of recent weeks, the announcement of its reopening was well received by world markets, causing oil prices to fall and stock markets to rise.
