Local authorities: Rajenee Mootoo-Caroopen, mayor of BBRH, resigns

Devika Pabaroo and Rajenee Mootoo-Caroopen, mayors of Curepipe and Beau Bassin/Rose-Hill respectively, were invited to leave their positions during a meeting held last Friday, in the presence of senior government figures. It was suggested that they give up their place to other elected officials. They had until last Wednesday to submit their resignation. Rajenee Mootoo-Caroopen and her deputy Mahen Choolun resigned from their positions on Wednesday. “The party authorities asked me to 'step down', I did it. I leave with a feeling of satisfaction even though I still had things to accomplish. I am happy with the work done so far. I have always worked with passion and devotion,” declared Rajenee MootooCaroopen. As for Mahen Choolun, he followed the same approach, complying with the directives of their party. For his part, Samy Chellen, deputy mayor of Curepipe, submitted his resignation. However, Devika Pabaroo, the mayor of the City of Lights, is still in office. However, she expressed her intention to return her mayoral collar for the good of the party, specifying that she wishes to finalize a project before leaving. “I asked for a little time. I have a project that I want to complete before leaving. Although I am being pushed out, I know that I did my best in this position. I am leaving my mark,” she said. Initially, Devika Pabaroo and Rajenee Mootoo-Caroopen were determined to complete their mandate. However, they chose to sacrifice themselves in order to toe the party line. The two women, from the ranks of the MSM, remain perplexed as to the real motivations behind this decision. According to close collaborators of the two mayors, "other people are in control", and Rajenee Mootoo-Caroopen as well as Devika Pabaroo had little choice but to comply with the request. It is expected that the replacements for these vacant positions will be designated by next week. In Beau Bassin/Rose-Hill, David Utile and Nazir Jungee could potentially access the positions of mayor and deputy mayor respectively. Regarding the town hall of Curepipe, the identity of Devika Pabaroo's successor still remains uncertain.
