Low tank filling rate: new measures planned soon

The water level in our reservoirs continues to fall, week after week.

The overall reservoir filling rate is now 65.1%, compared to 90.7% at the same time last year.

The largest reservoir in the country, Mare-aux-Vacoas, was only 43.8% full yesterday, Wednesday July 23, compared to 54.2% for La Nicolière.

The weather forecasts do not predict any immediate respite and as rain is still expected, the authorities are considering new measures to save this precious resource.

Among the measures under study is a possible tightening of restrictions on agricultural irrigation.

However, no official decision has been announced at this stage.

According to the Meteorological Services, expected precipitation between July and September should only represent around 77% of the seasonal average, a deficit of 23%, due to the El Niño phenomenon.

The authorities are closely monitoring developments in order to preserve the country's water reserves.
