Online scam: she orders furniture on TikTok and loses Rs 9,699

A 26-year-old resident of Sodnac claims to have been the victim of online fraud after paying Rs 9,699 for the purchase of furniture offered on TikTok. The matter was reported to the police.

According to the complaint filed with investigators, the young woman was at her mother's home, in Vacoas, on June 2 when she consulted the TikTok application. She says she came across a promotional video broadcast by an online store offering several furnishing items at reduced prices.

Interested in a shoe cabinet and a makeup table, she contacted the seller via WhatsApp to obtain more information on the products. According to his statements, the shoe cabinet was priced at Rs 4,999, while the makeup table was priced at Rs 4,500. To this would have been added a delivery fee of Rs 200, bringing the total cost of the order to Rs 9,699.

Still according to the complainant, the seller asked her to make full payment by bank transfer via the Juice application before shipping the items. The young woman claims to have made the payment the same day and to have sent proof of transaction to the merchant. The latter would then have confirmed to him that he had received the funds.

However, after the payment, the seller allegedly stopped all communication. The victim claims that his calls and messages went unanswered and that none of the furniture ordered has been delivered to him to date.

Believing that she had been defrauded of Rs 9,699, the resident of Sodnac finally filed a complaint with the police. An investigation has been opened to identify the perpetrator(s) of this alleged electronic fraud and to shed light on the circumstances of this transaction.
