The parliamentary session of this Tuesday, April 28 began with a tribute paid by the Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, to the former deputy Louis Percy LaFrance, who died on April 25, 2026 at the age of 70.

The Head of Government paid tribute to the memory of the man who left his mark on the political life of the country, particularly within the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM) in the 1980s.

Percy LaFrance took his first steps in politics during the 1982 general elections, where he ran in constituency No.17 (Curepipe/Midlands) under the MMM–PSM banner. He was elected as the second deputy of the constituency.

During the 1983 legislative elections, he again ran for office under the MMM label in the same constituency, without being elected. In April 1984, however, he entered the National Assembly as “best loser”, following the resignation of the late France Canabady.

In 1985, he was also elected mayor of Curepipe.

Subsequently, in August 1987, he tried his luck again in the general elections in the Curepipe/Midlands constituency under the banner of an MMM–MTD–FTS alliance, without success.

The Prime Minister expressed his condolences to his family and paid tribute to his political career and his commitment to the service of Mauritian society.

The leader of the opposition, Joe Lesjongard, as well as the Speaker of the National Assembly, Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra, also added their voices to those of the Prime Minister to present their sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
