A wastewater leak from the RT Knits Ltd factory is believed to be the cause of the pollution reported last Thursday in the Pointe-aux-Sables lagoon.
According to the Ministry of Agro-industry, a pipe was damaged during maintenance work on a sewer line, causing wastewater to spill into a canal located about fifty meters from the lagoon.
However, inspections did not reveal any flow to the sea or the death of marine organisms in the lagoon. On the other hand, dead fish were found in the canal.
The first analyzes revealed the presence of mercury. An investigation is underway.
