Water distribution: supply across the country reduced by two hours per day from Wednesday

The water supply will be reduced by two hours per day across the country from this Wednesday, August 5, 2026, announced the Central Water Authority (CWA) in a press release published this Monday, August 3. The new distribution schedules will be available on the CWA website (http://cwa.govmu.org).

This decision comes as water levels in the country's main reservoirs are considered worrying. According to figures published this Monday by the Water Resources Commission, the filling rate of the Mare-aux-Vacoas reservoir has fallen to 40.2%, compared to 89.9% at the same period in 2025. At La Nicolière, the filling rate is 46.8%, compared to 100% a year earlier.

“Taking into consideration this situation considered alarming in these two reservoirs, and given that heavy rains are not expected anytime soon, the authorities have taken the following decisions: restrictions in terms of water distribution (between five to six hours per day) in Plaines Wilhems, the Moka district and part of the Rivière Noire district are maintained,” indicates the CWA.

In addition, new restrictions will come into force on Monday August 10, 2026:

• agricultural irrigation will only be authorized for market gardening;

• the use of drinking water by vehicle washing centers (car wash) will be prohibited;

• the use of high pressure washers for washing vehicles, buildings, yards and driveways will be prohibited;

• the use of drinking water to fill swimming pools will no longer be authorized.

A working meeting bringing together the Ministry of Energy and Utilities, the CWA, the Water Resources Commission and the police is planned for this week to ensure compliance with these measures.

“These measures were taken in order to preserve available stocks and make them last as long as possible. The Water Resources Commission and the Central Water Authority count on the understanding of the public and thank them in advance for their valuable collaboration,” concludes the CWA.
