Randhir Etoar, aged 51, was sentenced to 28 years of criminal servitude for the murder of his partner, Rambawtee Affigadee. The sentence was pronounced yesterday by Judge Prameeta Goordyal-Chittoo, sitting in the Court of Assizes. The facts of this case date back to April 4, 2023 in Croignard.

Randhir Etoar and Rambawtee Affigadee were having an affair. This morning of April 4, 2023, Rambawtee Affigadee asked Randhir Etoar to bring him Cytheran fruits and breadfruit from a field. In the afternoon, he returned empty-handed, having spent the day getting drunk. The excuse he gave to his concubine: the branches of the trees were too high and he had not been able to pick the fruit.

Rambawtee Affigadee flew into a rage and an argument broke out between the two. According to Randhir Etoar's version, Rambawtee Affigadee asked him to leave the house, and walked towards him with a knife in her hand. He maintained that the victim had tried to stab him but that he was able to grab the weapon. He then stabbed Rambawtee Affigadee twice, hitting him in the heart.

He hid the knife and, after locking the doors, left the house. It was only three days later that Rambawtee Affigadee's body was discovered, in a state of decomposition. The autopsy attributed the cause of death to a stabbed wound to the heart.

Randhir Etoar had pleaded guilty to murder, in contravention of sections 215 and 223 of the Penal Code.

Judge Goordyal-Chittoo noted that the accused had cooperated with investigators, pleaded guilty in court and apologized to the victim's family. However, the Court also took into consideration that instead of helping the victim, he had left her to her sad fate and had locked the doors of the house.

The Court also took into account the fact that there has been an alarming increase in cases of femicide in Mauritius and that it was necessary to send a strong signal that such offenses would not be tolerated by the courts. For all these reasons, Randhir Etoar was sentenced to 28 years of criminal servitude.
