A former employee of Mauritius Duty Free Paradise claims that he felt humiliated during an incident on December 28, 2025 at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. He is seeking damages of Rs 5 million from his former employer for the loss.
In his formal notice, the complainant explains that he worked in the human resources department of Mauritius Duty Free Paradise (MDFP) before his departure for Canada in 2009.
In 1988, while he was in service, he accompanied his father who was going to have eye surgery in France. Unable to read his boarding pass, his father received help after he was allowed to board. But the situation had come to an end. The door of the plane had closed, forcing the flight attendants to intervene to bring him down.
This incident was subsequently reported to his employer. Which earned him a suspension. After his explanations, he was reinstated and worked for the MDFP until he immigrated to Canada in 2009.
In December 2025, there was another incident, when he was preparing to return to Canada via London. He was in the departure area of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport and entered an MDFP store. An MDFP employee then allegedly mentioned the old incident in a sarcastic tone, provoking laughter from other staff members, in front of several passengers.
He says he experienced this situation as a “public humiliation”. He believes that what happened was recorded by video surveillance. He adds that he left the country deeply affected. Already under medical treatment for stress, this event would have worsened his state of health.
Based on article 1384 of the Civil Code, it indicates that the MDFP is responsible for the actions of its employees. He argues that there was moral damage. Hence his claim for damages of Rs 5 million through a formal notice. Otherwise, he will take legal action.
