The first 330 pilgrims for the 2026 hajj left Mauritius yesterday for Saudi Arabia. On this occasion, the Minister of Housing and Lands, Shakeel Mohamed, responsible for the Hajj file in Mauritius, went to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport to ensure the progress of the operations. Referring to the incident that occurred on Saturday, he stressed that a solution was quickly found and that the five teenagers were able to obtain their visas to be able to perform the hajj.

“This measure does not only concern Mauritius. It also applies to other countries,” he says. He was to announce this “upsetting” decision for the families concerned on his Facebook page on Saturday. In the meantime, he was already in contact with the Saudi authorities, including the Deputy Minister of the hajj in Saudi Arabia and the ambassador posted to Mauritius to find a solution as quickly as possible. He had to have a special word for the staff of the Islamic Cultural Center (ICC), including its director as well as the center's volunteers for "the wonderful work" accomplished.

Furthermore, Minister Mohamed stressed that the Saudi authorities took note of the respect of all the deadlines imposed within the framework of this 2026 season. “Maurice was the good student,” he said.
