On December 10, 2025, Mamode Umaiir Nubbeebuccus, 34, was sentenced, before the Assize Court, to life in prison for the murder of his ex-wife, Ganeshwaree Buleeram, 34. He appealed the verdict, which he describes as excessive and harsh. The appeal will be heard on May 13, 2027 before the Supreme Court.
Mamode Umaiir Nubbeebuccus, a resident of Sebastopol, filed an appeal on December 22, 2025.
Through his lawyer, Me Hati Boo Ally Rojubally, he raised seven points. He maintains that the sentence imposed is disproportionate and tainted by an error of principle.
According to him, the Assize Court incorrectly assessed the evidence, giving excessive importance to aggravating facts not included in the accusation and not proven.
He also criticizes the Assize Court for not having granted him the appropriate sentence reduction after he pleaded guilty and for having incorrectly applied the jurisprudential principles in the matter.
He further claims that mitigating circumstances, including his behavior from the start of the investigation until his testimony, were not sufficiently taken into account.
Another point he raised is that the time spent in pre-trial detention would not have been properly taken into account or deducted from his sentence.
He also considers that the judge “erred in principle by importing into the sentencing exercise concepts not recognized as distinct legal categories under Mauritian criminal law and by according to such concepts determinative weight”.
Mamode Umaiir Nubbeebuccus pleaded guilty to the murder of his ex-wife, committed on November 8, 2019, in Camp-de-Masque-Pavé.
He had kidnapped, raped, sodomized, assaulted, tortured for six hours and stabbed his wife.
Ganeshwaree Buleeram had filed a complaint with the police to denounce the violence of her ex-husband. The last one dates back to November 5, 2019, three days before his death. The police had warned Mamode Umaiir Nubbeebuccus, ordering him to stop harassing her and to stay away from her workplace.
The autopsy attributed the death of Ganeshwaree Buleeram to “shock following a stab wound to the heart”.
In his verdict, judge Mehdi Manrakhan noted the brutality of the acts committed by the accused, evoking sexual violence and acts of torture.
According to him, Ganeshwaree Buleeram's voice must be heard and his rights respected. He also considered that this case cannot be considered in isolation, referring to cases of femicide in Mauritius.
