Yuvan Sungkur, 47, pretended to be a lawyer for two weeks even though he is not registered with the Mauritian bar. This Phoenix resident will perform 210 hours of community service. This is the verdict of the intermediate court.
In this case, the accused pleaded guilty to sixteen formal charges of “unauthorized practices” under sections 16 (1) (a) and 23 of the Law Practitioners Act and three charges of “making use of a forged private writing”. He was accused of having assisted Mr. Akil Bissessur before judicial bodies as well as at the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID). The offenses were committed during the period from August 21 to September 20, 2022. Yuvan Sungkur also represented a resident of Lallmatie, on September 8 and 14, 2022, at the Divisional Supporting Unit in Curepipe. He was also accused of having, on September 22, 2022, given false certificates to the secretary of the chief judge. He was defended by Mr. Mikash Hassamal while the prosecution was handled by Mr. Ricky Bhookhun, Senior State Counsel.
On June 5, 2026, Magistrate Nithiraj Bisnatsing sentenced Yuvan Sungkur to fifteen months in prison for unauthorized practices. The latter was also fined a total of Rs 150,000 for three charges of using forged documents. However, his prison sentence was suspended after the court ordered a social investigation to determine whether he is fit to carry out community work.
On July 20, 2026, the magistrate ordered Yuvan Sungkur to perform 210 hours of community service after a favorable social report. He will do this work at the Trianon community center. He is due to appear again on March 1, 2027.
The magistrate took into account Yuvan Sungkur's confession in his statements to the police. He mentioned his financial constraints, his academic background and that he did not obtain any financial advantage for what he did.
The magistrate considered that Yuvan Sungkur was disrespectful to the judicial system and that he also had the audacity to present false certificates. “Accused (Yuvan Sungkur), who had no legal training whatsoever, can indeed be classified as a charlatan who, through his actions, caused serious prejudice to the defense of two suspects in two separate cases,” noted the magistrate.
On the other hand, he also noted that the accused apologized and expressed remorse. He fully cooperated with the police during the investigation and discussed his personal situation. This is why he granted him a reprieve.Ledweena Ramasawmy-Mohun[email protected]
