PNQ on alleged cannabis trafficking: Ramgoolam's main announcements to the National Assembly

The Private Notice Question (PNQ) from the Leader of the Opposition, Joe Lesjongard, devoted to the alleged trafficking of 155.7 kg of cannabis, with an estimated value of Rs 233.5 million, between Mauritius and Reunion Island, dominated the debates in the National Assembly this Tuesday.

In response, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam assured that there would be “no cover-up” in this affair. “Nobody will be separated, nobody is above the law,” he declared, affirming that the investigation would take its course without preferential treatment.

The head of government also revealed that the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) had opened, on its own initiative, an investigation into the money laundering aspect of this affair. He said the Asset Recovery and Management Division is investigating the assets of the Govind family and any issues relating to possible "unexplained wealth", while the Declaration of Assets Unit is examining the assets of Gulshan Govind and his wife, Véronique Leu-Govind.

Navin Ramgoolam also indicated that Véronique Leu-Govind is expected this Wednesday, August 5 at the premises of the Western Division of the ADSU. According to him, she had presented herself there of her own free will on August 2, but the investigators had asked her to return accompanied by a lawyer.

The Prime Minister also indicated that a search carried out at the couple's home resulted in the seizure of four cannabis plants and a vial containing a substance suspected of being a dangerous drug. He added that an SUV belonging to Véronique Leu-Govind was examined by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), where a cannabis seed and traces of cannabis were allegedly discovered.

This investigation has already led to the arrest of Gulshan Govind, provisionally charged with conspiracy to import cannabis, cultivation of cannabis and possession of a dangerous drug. In the wake of this affair, Véronique Leu-Govind resigned from her position as Junior Minister, while retaining her mandate as deputy.
