The leader of the opposition, Joe Lesjongard, tabled a Motion of Privilege in the National Assembly this Tuesday, August 4, requesting the resignation of the deputy for constituency no. 14 (Savanne–Rivière-Noire), Véronique Leu-Govind.
In his motion, he claims that officers from the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) conducted a search of the MP's home as well as a vehicle registered in her name. He maintains that substances suspected of being illegal drugs were discovered there.
Joe Lesjongard also points out that Gulshan Govind, husband of the MP, was arrested as part of an investigation into an alleged drug trafficking network. He faces three provisional charges: conspiracy to import cannabis, cultivation of cannabis and possession of a dangerous drug.
Believing that these elements undermine the dignity and reputation of the National Assembly, the opposition leader requests that Véronique Leu-Govind renounce her mandate as deputy in order to preserve the integrity of the institution.
On Monday, Véronique Leu-Govind announced that she would continue her mandate as a deputy, despite her resignation from her functions as Junior Minister and from the presidency of the New Democrats.
In a letter addressed to the party's national executive committee, she explains having taken this decision "with great emotion and a deep sense of responsibility", in a personal and family context which she describes as "particularly difficult". She specifies, however, that this withdrawal does not mark the end of her political commitment.
The former Junior Minister is expected this Wednesday, August 5 at the premises of the Western Division of the ADSU, as part of the investigation into alleged trafficking of 155.7 kg of cannabis, with an estimated market value of Rs 233.5 million, between Mauritius and Reunion.
