Towards a founding congress in two weeks: Bérenger reveals the contours of his new party

Paul Bérenger lifts a corner of the veil on the structure of his new political formation. The former leader of the MMM announced at Défi Plus the holding of a founding congress in a fortnight, promised as “much broader in terms of participation”, which will formalize the name, the symbol and the main orientations of the movement in gestation.

A certainty has already been made: the word “militant” will appear in the name of the party, confides Paul Bérenger. The name and symbol should be made public this Saturday during a press briefing on Rue Ambrose, in Rose-Hill. Pending this congress, the structure remains entirely provisional. A temporary political bureau of ten members meets regularly, supported by an extended committee of around fifty representatives from twenty constituencies.

It is precisely this committee which is meeting this Saturday to examine the preparations for May 1 and begin discussions on the name and symbol, before the founding congress makes a final decision. A press conference is planned at the end of this meeting on Saturday to, in principle, unveil the name and logo of the new political party.

The question of party colors is not yet on the agenda. It is in this context of political recomposition that Paul Bérenger published, on April 22, on his Facebook page, a founding letter calling on Mauritians to join the emerging movement. He reaffirms ten areas of combat: fight against communalism, against discrimination, for democracy and electoral reform, against corruption, for meritocracy, social justice, education and public health, ecology, sovereignty over Chagos and Tromelin, and solidarity with oppressed peoples.

At the same time, the MMM Political Bureau is meeting this Monday, as usual, to provide an overview of political news. There should also once again be a question of potential appointments intended to fill the vacancies left by the departures of Paul Bérenger, Joanna Bérenger and Chetan Baboolall. The names mentioned are Arianne Navarre-Marie for the post of Deputy Prime Minister, Veda Baloomoody for a ministerial portfolio, Tony Apollon as Junior Minister replacing Joanna Bérenger, Ludovic Caserne for the post of Deputy Chief Whip and Govinden Venkatasami as Deputy Speaker.
