The investigation into a major maritime drug trafficking network operating between Mauritius and Reunion Island is experiencing a twist. Gulshan Govind, 42, husband of Junior Minister Véronique Leu-Govind, was arrested on Friday July 31 by investigators from the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) of the Western Division. This arrest is part of investigations relating to a shipment of 100 kilos of cannabis seized a week ago at the mouth of the Rivière du Mât, in Bras-Panon, in Reunion. His exact involvement in this matter is under investigation. Bloodhounds suspect him of complicity in a drug importation operation.
A search carried out at his home in Case-Noyale on Friday afternoon allowed investigators to discover a vial of methadone as well as four cannabis plants measuring between 7 and 10 centimeters. The plants, which were in pots on the roof of the house, were seized for the purposes of the investigation. On file with the police for drug dealing, Gulshan Govind was taken to the Adsu premises in Rose-Hill. After a night in detention, he is expected to be brought before the Weekend Court this Saturday on a provisional charge of drug trafficking.
According to the first elements of the investigation, the forty-year-old will be questioned about his alleged links with a drug trafficking network operating on the Mauritius/Reunion axis, recently dismantled by the Reunion authorities following the seizure of around 100 kilos of cannabis.
Adsu investigators are seeking to establish the exact role of the suspect within this alleged network as well as the Mauritian ramifications of this network. According to our information, it was thanks to exchanges of information between the Reunion Gendarmerie and Adsu that the operation was launched on Friday afternoon. The services of Me Rouben Mooroongapillay and Me Sailesh Seebaruth were retained to defend suspect Govind.
