The Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, assured the National Assembly this Tuesday that there would be “no cover-up” in the investigation into alleged trafficking of 155.7 kilos of cannabis, with an estimated market value of Rs 233.5 million, between Reunion and Mauritius.
Responding to the Private Notice Question (PNQ) from the Leader of the Opposition, Joe Lesjongard, he declared: “Nobody will be separated, nobody is above the law. »
The PNQ was dedicated to this investigation, in which Gulshan Govind, husband of former Junior Minister Véronique Leu-Govind, was arrested and provisionally charged with conspiracy to import cannabis, cultivation of cannabis and possession of dangerous drugs. Véronique Leu-Govind resigned from her position as Junior Minister on August 3, in the wake of this affair.
The Prime Minister said that a search had been carried out at the home of the Govind couple. According to him, investigators seized four cannabis plants as well as a vial containing a substance suspected of being a dangerous drug.
He added that an SUV belonging to Véronique Leu-Govind was also examined by police and the Scene of Crime Office (SOCO). A cannabis seed and traces of cannabis were allegedly discovered there.
Navin Ramgoolam also indicated that Véronique Leu-Govind had presented herself voluntarily to the ADSU on August 2, but that the investigators had asked her to return on Wednesday August 5, accompanied by a lawyer.
Responding to another question from Joe Lesjongard, the Prime Minister specified that Véronique Leu-Govind had visited Reunion three times, including twice in the company of her husband. He added that it was “completely normal” that she had access to the VIP Lounge in her capacity as Junior Minister.
